INJURY REPORT:
KARL O'SIMON - DISLOCATED SHOULDER, AND ELBOW (Out for remainder of season) KEITH BATSON - FATAL HEAD INJURIES (Pronounced dead at 10:36 p.m ET)
Batson killed in accident
Medical officials have officially confirmed that Keith Batson, the driver of the #20 FRAM Filters Ford F-150 has passed away due to injures sustained in an accident on lap 20. He was officially pronounced dead at 10:36 p.m just a hour and a half after the checker flag fell, and about 2 hours since he was admitted to the hospital.
"Kind of unfortunate that this would happen, I will be praying along with his family." - Charles Smith, who finished 3rd in the race.
The wreck began coming off of turn 2 on lap 20 when Barien Lowden turned Ivan Bradstone into the turn 2 outside wall, also collecting Chris James, Kent Youso, Chris Dandios, and Karl O'Simon. O'Simon's #16 Ford then came tumbling down the track striking the #20 on the top of the windshield, collapsing the roof on the #20. The race was then red flagged on lap 22 for nearly an hour while medical officials pulled and unconscious Batson out of the #20. Batson was loaded on a stretcher, and air lifted to nearby hospital when he passed.
Drivers also questioned the decision to restart the race, after the accident, "I needed to convince Adam (Donovan), that the race did not needed to be restarted because of all the damage that was done." - Greg Scottword.
Batson is the first fatality in a NOVAR event since 2006 when Shane Clarke II died at Chicago, and the Trucks' series second fatality since 1993 when Greg Wyke was killed at Michigan. Batson was 35 when he passed.
The #20 will not run for the rest of the season, and it is also likely that the 21 will also be withdrawn as well.
